UPCycled

pArts

Upcycled pARTs is an event bringing awareness to the ways we view plastic waste and the ways we can reimagine what plastic can be.

Many artists are starting to turn to plastic as a material, and it can be used for so much more than just waste. Think about the life cycle of plastic next time you buy single-use items or packaging.

In Norman, there are several recycling centers in town:

  • Hollywood Shopping Center - McGee and Lindsey

  • Cleveland County Fairgrounds - 1499 N. Porter

  • Fire Station #9 - 3001 E. Alameda

Glass cannot be recycled and therefore we encourage you to reuse your glass. Reused glass can be used for drinking, cooking, making candles, or crafting! Also remember that in Norman, you can only recycle plastics 1 and 2. Never recycle cardboard with food remains, like pizza boxes.

Remember that reducing your plastic consumption is the best thing you can do to reduce plastic waste. Buy reusable bags and utensils. In addition to the problem of waste, there are hundreds of ways you can change your behavior to become more sustainable. Please check out our list below and bookmark this page so you can refer to ways you can build a more sustainable lifestyle.

For this event, Green Week planned to work with an art therapy class to make a sculpture of a tree on which participants could hang leaves, paper cranes, and pledges to be more sustainable. Instead, check out OU Crimson and Green’s Sustainability Pledge to get some ideas for what you can do see survey link below.

Then, write your favorite on a piece of paper and make it into a paper crane! It will (nicely) remind you everyday to keep your pledge. Instructions can be found
